Knoxville attorney endows program at Carson-Newman University

Knoxville attorney Greg Logue was recently honored at a luncheon in recognition of a $50,000 gift he made to his alma mater. Logue, a 1983 graduate of Carson-Newman, and his wife Liane, a 1982 alumna, made the gift as a result of a former client’s generosity.

According to Logue, when his long-time client Wendell E. Burnett, Jr. passed away, Burnett left Logue a “substantial” amount of money with instructions that Logue donate the funds as he so desired.

For several decades, Burnett and his business partner, Eva Havlichek, owned the Smokey Mountain Gift Show in Gatlinburg. It was one of the largest gift shows in the country and, at the time, the largest convention-type event in Gatlinburg.

The gift will fund the Patsy Boyce Biology Program Endowment. Boyce is a professor of biology at C-N and was a mentor to Logue’s daughter, Emily, when she was a student at Carson-Newman. Emily is now attending medical school.

“Carson-Newman has been good to me,” said Logue. “I was able to attend C-N because of a full basketball scholarship. Carson-Newman changed my life.”

Scott Faulkenberry, C-N’s executive vice president for Advancement said, “Greg and Liane are wonderful examples of selfless alumni dedicated to their alma mater. We are very grateful for their gift and that they see the value of supporting Christian higher education.”
