School Board To Address Insurance On Fair Property

The Jefferson County School Board met for a Work Session and voting meeting on Thursday evening at the Historic Jefferson County Courthouse. Absent from the meeting was Board Member Bradley. Several interest groups from various schools were recognized at the beginning of the voting meeting. Jefferson County Mayor Mark Potts was on hand to present the Board with a proclamation for their dedication and service to education in Jefferson County. Last week was School Board appreciation across the state.

The Board approved three budget amendments that were general housekeeping in nature, as well as several field trips. They also approved, as a part of on going process, a handful of policies and the tenure teacher list. Board Members were informed that an inquiry has been made regarding the purchase of property adjacent to Maury Middle School that has lake access. They were also informed that an offer to sell acreage previously considered for purchase by the board, at the price of $75,000 for reduced amount of land had been brought and they will consider both the lake access and additional property purchase at the February work session.

Director of Schools Johnston and Jefferson County Finance Director Potts informed the Board that the Jefferson County Fair does not currently have insurance on the fair property. At the request of the Board fair officials will be contacted in the hopes of reconciling the situation. Currently, the School System does have liability on the property but there is not full coverage on the buildings on the fair site.

The Board will meet next month at the Historic Jefferson County Courthouse and will receive updates on the fair property situation.
