C-N Announces New Associate Degree

Students will soon have the opportunity to earn an Associate of Arts degree in photography at Carson-Newman University.

Beginning in fall 2019, the new degree path will utilize specialized coursework derived in large part from C-N’s Bachelor of Arts in photography degree.

The A.A. in photography has been approved by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, of which the University is an institutional member.

“The Art Department believes this degree provides students with a working knowledge of photography and fundamental darkroom and studio skills to prepare students for entry-level employment in photography or continuation of the B.A. degree in photography,” said Professor Julie Rabun, Art Department chair. “This gives Carson-Newman University the ability to offer another viable and unique option for Tennessee Promise students.”

Qualifying for Tennessee Promise means Carson-Newman students could receive the same dollar amount of financial aid as the cost of tuition at a Tennessee community college.

And thanks to the Carson-Newman Promise scholarship, that aid can continue if students decide to seek their Bachelor’s degree in photography. Rabun said pursing the B.A. in photography would be a seamless process, because students would already have completed a directed approach with specific instruction in film, darkroom work and digital photography.

“Once Tennessee Promise students earn their associate’s degree, and if they hold a 2.5 GPA, that’s when the Carson-Newman Promise kicks in with additional aid for two more years,” said Danette Seale, executive director of Financial Aid.
