Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. This recognition program for Club members promotes service to Club, community and family; academic success; strong moral character; life goals; and poise and public speaking ability. Boys & Girls Clubs recognize members ages 14 to 18 as Youth of the Month Winners and select a Youth of the Year, who then participates in state competitions. State winners each receive a $5,000 scholarship and advance to regional competitions. Regional winners receive an additional $10,000 college scholarship, renewable for four years up to $40,000. Six youth, including five regional winners and a military winner, advance to the National Youth of the Year competition for a chance at an additional scholarship of $25,000, renewable up to $100,000 for four years. The National Youth of the Year represents all Boys & Girls Club youth.

This week the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dumplin Valley held it’s 2019 Organization Youth of the Year competition to select the winner that will move on to compete in Nashville in March for the State title and $5,000 in college scholarships. Winning for the second year in a row is David Price from the Newport Club. Runner up, Deadrick Osbourne from the Jefferson City Club will also travel to Nashville in March along with David to support him in the competition and meet other Teens from Clubs all over the state.

“They both did an awesome job!” said Josh Mathys, Board President, Boys & Girls Clubs of Dumplin Valley. “It was a hard decision to make because both their stories were so honest and heartfelt. I could tell they worked hard to win the title and I am proud of them both!”

David has been a Club member for six years & participates in the Keystone Club, a service-based Club focusing on Club & community service. David aspires to become an officer in the Navy someday and continue to serve his country as he currently serves his community. David attributes his confidence and leadership ability to his Club experience and looks forward to inspiring the next generation of Club members.

17-year-old Deadrick (DJ) has been a Jefferson City Club member since 2016. He is a Torch Club member where is developing and strengthening his leadership skills, giving him a firm foundation of good character and integrity that will help him grow in his career as a Nurse someday.

“We are so proud of what our Club kids have learned and how they’ve grown,” says Jessica Page, BGCDV CEO. “I know that both David & DJ will represent our Clubs well in Nashville.”
