Happy Memorial Day from The Jefferson County Post

Often known as the unofficial start to the summer season, Memorial Day holds a much deeper meaning.

The holiday was originally known as Decoration Day, which started shortly after the Civil War. Set aside as a special day to honor those who had fallen during the conflict, Decoration Day was just how it sounded, a day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers in the national cemeteries. Originally, from the years of 1868 all the way up until 1970, the holiday was celebrated on May 30. In 1971, when Memorial Day became an official nationally recognized holiday, the celebration was shifted to the last Monday in May.

A common misconception about the holiday, is that it’s meant to honor all solidiers, but each group actually gets their own days. Memorial Day is intended to honor soldiers in the United States Armed Forces that have fallen in the time of combat. Veterans Day, which is observed in November, honors those who have served and are still living. Armed Forces Day, that honors the men and women that are currently serving, happens at the beginning of May.

The long weekend though, offers up the first chance for many Americans to celebrate the beginning of picnic, camping, boating, and beach season. There are also many opportunities from parades to motorcycle rides that honor the fallen soldiers that have died protecting our freedom. So as we have our family gatherings, vacations, and parties today, let us take a moment to remember what this weekend is about.
