School Board Approves 2019-2020 Calendar

The Jefferson County Board of School Commissioners convened at the Historic Jefferson County Courthouse Thursday night for the monthly work session and meeting.

To begin the meeting, Maury Middle School and New Market Elementary Schools were recognized as Tennessee Reward Schools. Reward schools are generally those that are improving in terms of achievement and growth for both all students and student groups. These schools are identified annually.

Also recognized during the meeting were the White Pine School Stem Program, the Jefferson Middle School Stem Program, Maury Middle School’s Exceptional Learners (the CDC Program), and New Market School’s Safety Patrol. Tennessee School Board Association also recognized Randall Bradley and Denise Fair.

On other business the board debated on three calendars for the 2019-2020 school year. An item of discussion among the board members was including Veterans Day as a student holiday. Following a lengthy back and forth among board members, a calendar that did not include Veterans Day as a student holiday passed with a split vote.

Another item on the agenda to be approved was the CTE Apprenticeship Program through the OshKosh Corporation and the CTE Program at Jefferson County High School, which passed unanimously.

Other items up for discussion included teacher compensation and the contract with Jefferson County Fair. The Fair Committee had requested several things, including lowering the lease price for leasing the parking lots at Jefferson Elementary and Middle Schools. Both matters will be discussed further at the retreat.
