Mask Clarification From DOE

Jefferson County Schools is committed to the safety of our students and employees. Since reopening school buildings for the 2020-2021 school year, the district has continued to provide updated guidance on procedures/protocols associated with the health and safety of all students, employees, and families.

Over the first few days of school, there has been some confusion concerning the use of masks for students and staff members of Jefferson County Schools. In some cases, we have incorrectly interpreted the guidelines for students and staff members to wear masks.

Please see the information below for accurate information concerning the use of masks by students and staff members in Jefferson County Schools.

  • Masks are strongly encouraged for K-5 based on Department of Health recommendations
  • Masks are the expectation for 6-12 grade students
  • Masks are encouraged by all students on buses
  • Employees are to wear masks when in buildings and social distancing cannot be maintained.

Students will not be required to wear masks when outside for class or waiting on a bus or in the car rider line at dismissal. Additionally, students are not required to wear masks during physical activity such as recess, rigorous activity in PE, or similar activities.

In some cases, students may be participating in an outside learning activity where students cannot be socially distanced. In these cases, students will wear a mask long enough to participate in the short learning activity and then remove the mask once appropriate distance can be maintained or physical activity begins. While not required, students may wear a mask during any of the activities listed above based on personal choice.

We apologize for any inconvenience this confusion generated. The school system remains committed to continuing to work with the entire community to promote a safe environment at each campus.
