Farmland Legacy and Estate Planning Workshop Scheduled, March 9, 2013

Registration now open for UT Extension educational course

Planning for the disposition of the family farm or business can be an emotional task, but experts say planning is key to ensuring the future of the family’s land or business.

A workshop is planned to ease the burden of farmland estate planning hosted by UT Extension – Jefferson County. The date for the event is March 9th at the UT Extension – Jefferson County office in Dandridge.

Alice Rhea, a UT Extension farm management specialist, says the workshops will help in the planning process by providing valuable resources for all generations. Topics will include family communication, business and estate planning, record keeping, and much more. “The workshops help landowners to start a dialogue with their family and plan today for the future of their farm,” Rhea said.

Registration is now open and the fee is $30 with a deadline of March 1st. The registration fee includes morning and afternoon refreshments, lunch, and resource materials including a workbook with over 200 pages of educational material to help you plan the future of your farm. Space is limited so early registration is encouraged.

Participants may register by contacting the UT Extension – Jefferson County office at 865-397-2969

Dr. Tim Cross, dean of UT Extension, encourages producers to attend one of the events. “Many farm families work hard for a lifetime to generate income and accumulate land, machinery, and financial assets to support their family,” he said. “It is crucial that these families learn how to plan for the future of their estates, ensuring that their family continues to be taken care of in the future.”

Through UT Extension, the UT Institute of Agriculture brings research-based information about agriculture, family and consumer sciences, and resource development to the people of Tennessee where they live and work.
