LADY EAGLES TRAVEL TO SALISBURY

Carson-Newman has lost five of last six games

The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles basketball team (13-10, 7-9 South Atlantic Conference) will travel to Salisbury, N.C. to face the Catawba Lady Indians (15-9, 11-5 South Atlantic Conference) at Goodman Gymnasium on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

The Lady Eagles have lost five of their last six games, and fell to the Lady Indians earlier this season 66-58 at Holt Fieldhouse on Jan. 26.

“We’re going to face a team that’s won five in a row, certainly a hot basketball team,” said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. “They are very dangerous because they have three kids scoring in double-figures, I really like their basketball team. They have a lot of nice pieces to the puzzle.”

Carson-Newman fell in its last game to league-leading Anderson 58-51 this past Saturday at Holt Fieldhouse. Anderson swept the season series by finishing the game on an 11-4 run to win by seven points.

Against Anderson, Carson-Newman was led in scoring by a pair of post players, as senior Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) led the Lady Eagles with 19 points and she was joined in double-digits by senior Courdne Miles (Burlington, N.C.) with her 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Eagles are led in scoring by freshman Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) who was 0-for-12 shooting from the field and 0-of-9 from three-point land in the setback against Anderson.

In the first meeting with Catawba, Carson- Newman was led in scoring by junior forward Shyra Clark (Cleveland, Tenn.) with her 13 points as she was 6-of-15 shooting from the field. The Lady Eagles led late in the contest, but the Lady Indians got the lead back and put the game out of reach with an 11-2 run to take a 56-49 lead with 2:43 left in the contest.

Catawba is in a third-place in the SAC, two games back of Anderson at 11-5. The Lady Indians are led in scoring by sophomore guard Chloe Bully, who averages 14.4 points per game and scored 17 points in the first matchup against Carson-Newman.

The top scorer for Catawba against the Lady Eagles was forward Elizabeth Merritt who registered 25 points with seven rebounds in the contest.

The Lady Eagles hold a 32-22 lead in the series, however Catawba has won three of the past five meetings, including the past two matchups.
