Getting Involved

My daughter and granddaughter are coming to live with me for awhile and she will be starting high school next year. I am looking for something to get her involved in over the summer so she will know some people going into the new school year. I am hoping that some familiar faces might ease the transition. Do you have any suggestions?

It is always hard to for a teenager to move and it is nice that you are concerned enough to try and help her ease the way. There are some summer programs in the various areas of the County. Not knowing your granddaughter’s interest, I can only suggest a variety of things to choose from. A summer softball league might be of some interest or, perhaps, a swim team. Jefferson City has a summer league for swimmers that is very active and the Field of Dreams, as well as other areas of the County, has a summer softball league. You might check out area churches because some of them have very active teen programs. The Jefferson City Library has a teen program and she might just like to spend some time at the public pool in Jefferson City. Fortunately, your granddaughter will not be the only student a little apprehensive when school starts. Freshmen in the County will all go to the new Patriot Academy. There will be school sponsored opportunities to meet other students before the first day of class which should help ease the way. Remember that students from all over the County will be merging together at the new school. Urge your granddaughter to get involved in activities at the beginning of school and the transition should be a relatively smooth one.
