LADY EAGLES FIFTH SEED IN SAC TOURNAMENT

Carson-Newman will travel to Newberry for quarterfinal game on Wednesday

The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles basketball team (15-10, 9-9 South Atlantic Conference) earned a fifth seed for the 2013 Food Lion SAC Women’s Basketball Championship, announced by the league office Saturday.

Carson-Newman will play its quarterfinal game at fourth-seeded Newberry on Wednesday March 6 at 7 p.m. inside Eleazer Arena.

The Lady Eagles and Wolves split both meetings this season, with each team winning on their home court. Carson-Newman held Newberry to a season-low 39 points in a 57-39 win on Jan. 12 in Jefferson City, while the Wolves won 75-66 on Feb. 16 in Newberry.

After losing five of six games, the Lady Eagles bounced back with a pair of victories this past week. Carson-Newman collected a 60-59 road win at Catawba this past Wednesday, with Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) leading the Lady Eagles with a career-high 24 points and six three-pointers.

On Saturday, Carson-Newman honored its seniors with a 56-50 win over Wingate at Holt Fieldhouse.

The Lady Eagles overcame a season-low 17 points in the first half to outscore the Bulldogs 39-24 in the second half to send out seniors Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.), Courdne Miles (Burlington, N.C.) and Whitney Moody (Blountville, Tenn.) out with a victory in their final game at Holt Fieldhouse.

The winner of Wednesday’s quarterfinal matchup between Carson-Newman and Newberry will face the winner of top-seeded Anderson and eighth-seeded Lincoln Memorial in the semifinals at Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C. on Saturday March 9 at noon. The championship game will be played on Sunday March 10 at 1:30 p.m. at Timmons Arena.
