Carson-Newman falls in conference opener to Anderson University

Carson-Newman (2-3) pulled out wins at no. 1 and no. 2 singles before dropping a 7-2 decision against Anderson (5-3) Monday afternoon at the Carson-Newman tennis complex.

Freshman Juan Perez (Ecuador) secured an important win against Abdoulaye Camara at no. 1 singles 6-3, 6-4. At no. 2 singles, Paul Birdsong (Woodstock, Ga.) clinched a big victory against Daniel Gonzalez 6-4, 6-4.

The Eagles fell just short of a win at the three spot. Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) fell to Krystof Gulbinovic 6-4, 6-5.

In doubles competition, Birdsong and Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga.) did well against Gulbinovic and Paul Calhoun, but could not find the win 9-7. Likewise, Mackay and Perez had a close encounter with triumph against Camara and Jerome Branker, but fell 8-6 in the end.

Carson-Newman faces its next conference match at 2:00 p.m. this Friday, at Catawba.
