Men’s tennis swept by Wingate

Carson-Newman (2-5, 0-3 SAC) fell at nationally-ranked Wingate (9-5, 3-0 SAC) 9-0 on Saturday afternoon.

At no. 1 singles, freshman Juan Perez (Ecuador) took Kennedy Cancelado to a third-set tiebreaker before dropping the match 5-7, 6-3, 10-4. Jonathan Allen (Lenoir City, Tenn.) had a close game at no. 5 singles against Josh Eardley, but Eardley broke serve twice to win 6-4, 6-4.

Perez and Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) narrowly lost to Neal Towlson and Roberto Hennis 8-5 at no. 1 doubles to cede the doubles point to the Bulldogs. In the second doubles spot, Paul Birdsong (Woodstock, Ga.) and Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga.) fell just shy of a victory losing in a 8-4 decision to Concelado and Ryan Forbes.

The Eagles return home to face the University of the Cumberlands this Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.
