Women’s tennis drops close match at Wingate

Carson-Newman (2-6, 0-3 SAC) fell 6-3 in a closely contested match against no. 32 Wingate (8-5, 3-0 SAC) on Saturday.

Junior Stefy Stand (Ecuador) overcame Ali Evers in a third-set tiebreaker 0-6, 6-4, 10-7 at no. 1 singles to start singles play off with a win. In another tiebreaker in the second singles spot, Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) defeated Becca Thomas 0-6, 7-6, 10-5 to even the match.

At no. 4 singles, Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) beat Tiffany Williams in two close sets 6-4, 7-6.

Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) was narrowly defeated by Kelli Ferguson at no. 5 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 decision. In the third singles spot, Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) neared victory but could not confirm the win resulting in a 6-2, 6-3 final.

In doubles play, Guerreiro and Stand teamed up against Thomas and Evers in the no. 1 spot falling just short of triumph 8-4.

The Eagles return home Monday to face off against University of Cumberlands at 1:30 p.m.
