Eagles drop close match at King

Carson-Newman (2-6) fell at King College (6-3) in a closely contested battle 5-4 on Tuesday on the road.

Carson-Newman started strong in doubles play with a pair of wins.

Paul Birdsong (Woodstock, Ga.) and Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga.) paired up in doubles play to steal the victory from Leo Brigato and Patrick Jones with a score of 8-6 in the no. 2 spot. The team of Jonathan Allen (Lenoir City, Tenn.) and Dalton Moore (Gate City, Va.) took another win at no. 3 doubles concluding 8-2 versus Rafael Francisco and William Boyce.

Juan Perez (Ecuador) and Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) neared success but dropped the match to Rodrigo Avila and Pablo Vidal at no. 1 doubles 8-6.

In singles play, Allen secured a win 7-6 (4), 6-1 against Francisco in the no. 5 spot. Holdway roped in another victory for the Eagles at no. 3 singles beating Brigato 6-0, 7-5.

At no. 6 singles, Moore competed closely with Boyce but dropped the match 6-3, 7-6 (2). Mackay also played well but fell to Jones with a 6-4, 6-3 decision.

Carson-Newman is off for spring break before returning home to square off with Tennessee Wesleyan on March 22.
