Spring Breaks Past

This week I have been thinking of Spring breaks past and longing for a return to warm weather (which I understand is coming later this week). When I was young, kids just didn’t take off on trips for Spring Break. Oh, sure, some lucky college students might take a quick trip to the beach on the cheap, but school age kids certainly never did anything like that. Now is appears to be common place for children as young as middle school to take a Spring Break trip. When I was going to school, we were just happy to have a few days vacation. No homework and no teachers were enough of a break for us. According to my grandson and his friends, college Spring Break isn’t what it used to be. Now many college students find themselves doing service work or other school related activities during their break. I suppose the days of sun and fun have been passed down to the younger set. I remember when my own children were in college, a Spring Break was almost a rite of passage. Of course, there were no pricy trips on cruise ships or to tropical islands. Nope, back then students flocked to Florida for a few day beach fun and they did it on their own dime, not their parents. I suppose it is hard for a middle school student to pay for a pricy Spring Break trip on babysitting money. Oh, well. The Spring Breakers are getting younger and I am getting older and I guess that that is just the way of the world. Still, in a world that seems to be spinning forward at mach speed shouldn’t there be something reserved for college? Memories are only made more precious for things that are anticipated. With that being said, I think that I will put on the movie Where the Boys Are and dream of Spring Breaks past.
