The Save Our Farms and Homes group met on Saturday afternoon, April 6, 2013, to discuss the recent developments associated with the proposed Megasite project and the impact they will have on property owners in the footprint of the project. Earlier last week, Jefferson County Economic Development Oversight Committee (EDOC) released a statement saying that they will no longer be pursuing the Megasite project and noted opposition from property owners as the major factor in their decision. Attorney for the affected property owners, Scott Hurley, commended members of SOFAH for their commitment and dedication to preserving their property, during Saturday’s meeting. Hurley stated that EDOC’s announcement was an important step for property owners, however there are still considerations to address regarding the Megasite project, as well as intrinsic problems with the actions of some elected officials and organizations that receive tax payer funding. He said that a conclusive end to the project should include a vote from the Budget Committee and County Commission to cease funding of the Megasite project, a return of the full previously funded amount of $442,311 to the tax payers and all contracts should be released, including property owners and those with companies associated with the certification and acquisition process.

Hurley and members of the group will be considering what, if any, action will be taken in regard to activities contrary to the Open Meetings Act. The group is also concerned about the level of tax payer funding that goes to EDOC and the Chamber of Commerce, as well as the lack of transparency from those organizations.

State Senator Niceley and House Representative Faison sent congratulations to the group and concurred with Hurley that good people can come together to instigate change in government. SOFAH will be present for Commission votes on the Megasite issue at Monday’s Budget and Full Commission meetings. Some members of the group have submitted applications for 4 open positions on the Industrial Development Board. Those open seats will first come before the Nominating Committee for recommendation before going before the Full Commission for placement.
