Fool Us Twice And We Deserve It

editorial-logo3This week the County Commission is expected to remove all financial support for the proposed Megasite project. Though the past few months have been a mega roller coaster ride for Jefferson County, perhaps some benefit has come from the defunct project. As a community, most have been blissfully unaware of their government and those that it chooses to do business with. After months in the glaring spotlight, I think that many have found a renewed interest in the political climate in the County and are concerned about the direction that certain associations will take this community. Awareness is a wonderful thing. You cannot truly see until your eyes have been opened but it is not enough to stand on the sidelines or coach from your couch. We all have skin in this game and it is time that we start to act like it. This community is filled with talented, bright, innovative and experienced minds that can bring something good to the table. We cannot afford to leave the future of our County to those that see us as a step toward something better. This is our home and our community and we must take an active role in its prosperity. Or we can sit silently by, as we have for several years, and hope for the best. We know where that path leads…we have been down that road before and it leads to nowhere. It could be the dawning of a new day in Jefferson County or it could be the same old- same old that we have all become accustomed to. I hope that, when the smoke clears and the mega issue is finally laid to rest, this community remembers where it has been and moves with purpose toward where it is going. Fooled us once, shame on you. Fool us twice and we deserve it.
