The Samuel Doak Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Scholarship was awarded by Mary Jane Coleman, Samuel Doak Chapter’s Scholarship Chairman on April 25, 2013. This Scholarship is offered to a senior student at Morristown Hamblen High School-East, Morristown Hamblen High School-West, Jefferson County High School, and Grainger County High School. The winner of this scholarship at each school is awarded five hundred dollars ($500.00) for higher education.

The winners are Chance Cansler from Morristown – East. His grandmother is Barbara Cansler. He is the Valedictorian for the Class of 2013, and a member of Beta Club. He is the Captain of Debate Team, a member of the Scholastic Bowl, and volunteers for Food on Foot. Chance plans to become a U. S. History instructor.

Andrew Epps, who is the son of Rex and Robin Epps, attends Morristown – West. He was a member of Beta Club for eight years, and is a Dual-Enrollment Student at Walter State College. Andrew has played football for four years, and was the captain for one year; and has played baseball for four years. He attends First Baptist Church, and volunteers for Toys for Tots, and volunteers for parks and recreation little league baseball. Andrew plans to attend Walters State for two years, then go to the University of Tennessee, and finally attend Optometry School.

The winner from Jefferson County High School is Alex Logan, whose mother is Jeanne Waddell. Alex has been a National German Honor Society member for two years; president of the Anti-Bullying Club for two years; and Drum Major for Jefferson County High School’s Marching Band. He also Volunteers for fund raising events for the Boy Scouts and band; and works at the Pizza Hut and at McDonalds.  Alex intends to become a lawyer.

To be eligible, the applicant must be a citizen of the United States,

must enclose a copy of his school transcript record, and must attend, or plan to attend an institution of higher learning. The applicant must obtain a letter of recommendation from his/her High School Principal, and the applicant must submit an essay of 300 words in which the student describes the historical significance and relevancy of the DAR Organization.
