FRED EUGENE UNDERWOOD

FRED EUGENE UNDERWOOD, age 82, of Jefferson City, TN passed away May 21, 2013. He leaves behind his loving wife, Ora, of 57 years; children, Tim (Robin), Melissa (Norman) Fox and Kent (Gail); grandchildren, Lauren, Justin, Jamie (Jamison) Bien, Benjamin, Sarah and Abby Underwood; great-grandson, Connor Bien; sisters, Una Lee Underwood, Wanda Hinchey, and Jane (Bob) Riner; brother, Marion (Marilyn) Underwood; also numerous nieces and nephews. Aside from his family, farming was his greatest passion.He raised cattle for over 47 years and also served on the Jefferson County Soil Conservation Board for 12 years. He also had been a representative on the Rural Development Board. Sports were always at the center of his life. Fred lettered all four years in football and baseball while attending Jefferson High School. After the Korean War, he played baseball in a local league. He was very proud that as a pitcher, no one ever hit a home run on him. For the last several years, Bob Riner, his brother-in-law, shared many conversations about on going ball games. Fred served his country during the Korean War as a Military Police officer. He was in the Honorary Color Guard for Four-Star General Matthew Ridgeway and General Mark Clark. During this time, he also stood Honor Guard during the signing of the peace treaty between the United States and Japan in 1952. He retired from American Enka after 32 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Beulah Underwood; sister, Dorothy; and brother, Tony (Charlotte). The family would like to thank Pastor John Pinkston, Buffalo Grove Baptist Church, Dr. Ayers and his wonderful staff; special friends, Jack Rankin and Steve Owens. Funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the Farrar Jefferson City Chapel with Rev. John Pinkston officiating. Receiving of friends will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. prior to the service. Family and friends will meet at 2:00 p.m. Friday afternoon at the funeral home to proceed to Jefferson Memorial Gardens for a 3:00 p.m. graveside interment service.
