Dollar General Foundation Grant to Help Support Tennessee Financial Literacy Commission’s Mission

The Tennessee Financial Literacy Commission received a $15,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation this month to support the Commission’s mission of increasing Tennesseans’ knowledge of money management and related issues.

The commission is a nonprofit organization, created by the Tennessee General Assembly and administered by the Tennessee Treasury Department. The commission plans to use the grant funds to support its goals, which include increasing the college savings rate among Tennesseans, increasing the average savings rate of low income Tennessee families and increasing the average rate of retirement savings for Tennesseans. The commission will work toward these goals by hosting teacher training summits across the state for elementary and middle school teachers.

“I am very grateful that the Dollar General Literacy Foundation provided these funds to the Tennessee Financial Literacy Commission,” Tennessee State Treasurer David H. Lillard, Jr. said. “These grant funds are key to the commission’s work to increase the financial literacy rate among Tennesseans. In order to survive in today’s world, all Tennesseans need to understand the basics of effectively saving, budgeting and managing money.”

The commission was one of 42 Nashville area nonprofit organizations that received grants from Dollar General Literacy Foundation during a ceremony at the Nashville Public Library. The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has provided more than $81 million in grants to support education and literacy programs since 1993.
