Dandridge resident, Travis Hurdle, visited with children and parents last Wednesday as part of the Dandridge Library Summer Reading Program. Hurdle is an Archaeologist with Cultural Resource Analysts, Inc. (CRA) in Knoxville. Approximately 65 people were in attendance and the children appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Hurdle had numerous artifacts on display and discussed both the prehistoric and historic time periods as they relate to East Tennessee. Hurdle was asked why he decided to visit with the library to teach about archaeology and he replied, “Teaching people, especially the younger generation, about the importance of preservation and culture is very worthwhile. We can all look to our past to see where we’ve been and perhaps learn more about where we’re going. Often times many answers are just beneath our feet; just beneath the surface.” Hurdle stressed to the audience the importance of archaeology and community involvement. The children were captivated and really enjoyed hearing Hurdle say that there is an occupation that requires you to play in the dirt. The children undoubtedly went home that afternoon to dig holes in their parents’ back yard.

Cultural Resource Analysts, Inc. is located in downtown Knoxville at 119 West Summit Hill Drive. The firm has 11 offices nationwide and is currently celebrating 30 years in business. Hurdle said that he can be contacted at 865-249-6035 and he is happy to answer questions and help in any way he can.
