School Board – Cuts Made, Budget Passed

The Jefferson County School Board met in a Called Meeting on Thursday, August 1, 2013, at the Department of Education.  The purpose of the meeting was to address the fiscal year 2013-2014 budget and cuts in the amount of $174,750, as were approved by the Jefferson County Commission on Monday, July 29, 2013. Absent were Board Members Potts and Vines.

Director of Jefferson County Schools Edmonds presented the Board with a recommendation for cuts in the amount of $174,750. Included in the reductions were-$43,670 from Transportation Equipment which will allow for 3 new bus purchases instead of 4 plus one used bus-$100,000 in Teacher Salaries which will leave no extra teacher units built into the budget in case of need, should additional teaching units be needed they will be met with line item transfers or fund balance but no teachers will lose their jobs to accommodate the cut-$8,640 in Special Education Instructional Supplies-$2,500 in Special Education Travel-$1,440  in Office of the Superintendent for wire less internet cards under other contracted services-$18,500 in Board of Education excess liability insurance budgeting-for a total reduction of the required $174,750.

Board Member Bradley made the Motion to adopt the budget with $174,750 in reductions and Board Member Rogers 2nd the Motion. The Motion Passed 5-0.

Board Member Rogers made a Motion to accept the fiscal year 2013-2014 school budget with total anticipated revenues of $49,600,561 plus $1,017,007 from school system fund balance for a total of $50,617,523. Board Member Lowery 2nd the Motion and it Passed 5-0.
