That Time Of Year Again

Hello, Darlings. It is that time of the year that children dread, the start of a new school year. As a life long fashionista, I sometimes cringe at the “what to wear” rules that are a part of most schools. So, in an effort to help all of those parents looking to help their child keep or establish a style in the mist of the rules I am offering my humble suggestions. Remember that fashion can both adhere to the rules and still be stylish, if you just put a little effort into it. For the very young, the most important thing is that they are clean and comfortable. I know that time is often short in the mornings but it is unacceptable to send a child to school without teeth and hair brushed and face washed. Though it is important that children be allowed to have their own sense of style, it makes life much easier if clothing is largely mix and match. Lots of solid pants and shirts that have a little pattern to them will work well in most cases. There are some really cute tee shirts for very little money at the local discount stores but just be sure to buy quality. Fabric that shrinks will be uncomfortable and will find you back at the store much sooner than necessary. Remember that little ones need closed toe shoes so invest in a good pair for the school year.

Older student will have a much harder time meshing school dress code with their personal style. Encourage young ladies to look at accessories as a way to personalize their look. There are some great scarves, bracelets and pins that can jazz up even the most dress code appropriate outfit. A funky pair of shoes can also be a statement piece and they don’t have to break the bank. Though many girls are not fond of longer shorts or skirts, thankfully there are some very fashion forward choices. The walking short or Bermuda short is back in style and can be very cute with the right shirt and a good pair of shoes. For the sporty or casual girl, try pairing the longer shorts with a simple tee in an eye catching color and adding a patterned pair of toms. For the more girly girl, choose a light fabric top with a little ruffle or print and a small wedge heel. If there is a young man that you are dressing, remember that is all about the funky shoes.

Dressing for school days may take a little bit of creativity but it does not have to be a fashion killer. Think outside the box, while adhering to the rules. Hats-No, Scarves-Yes. Short, shorts are out but a great pair of Bermuda shorts are perfect. It can be done and it can be fun and it is a great way to teach children about the appropriateness of clothing in other situations. Think of it as a fashionista challenge and set out to be at the head of the class when it comes to appropriate, fun fashion.
