Dandridge’s Grande Dame has been fully restored to her former glory and is open and ready for business. The Shepherd Inn started life as a modest cabin in pre civil war Dandridge. As the County seat and due to an attractive position on the river, the Town was a hot spot of travel in the early history of Tennessee and the Shepherd Inn was a stopping point for many historical figures. Though the historical masterpiece is now a work of beauty, its simple beginnings can be found incorporated in the structure of the Inn. The original cabin lies within the structure, as a reminder of things long past. In its long lifetime, the Shepherd’s Inn has served the Town as an Inn and tavern for weary travelers, an entertainment venue for musicians making the round in the first few decades of the 1900s and as a private resident during the most recent years. Proprietors Jim and Karen Everett had never considered ownership of the historic Inn, however that changed when they were approached by local townspeople who were concerned about the future of the majestic beauty when heirs of the most recent owners decided to sell the property. Having a long interest in preserving history, coupled with a desire to revitalize Dandridge, the Everetts made the move to purchase the Shepherd’s Inn. After much thought and discussion, they decided to return the Inn to its former purpose and glory. With the decision made, the hard work began. After narrowing down a time period of the 1930s and 1940s, the restoration process started in earnest and it was a time consuming labor of love. Guest rooms have been designed to play into the tranquility of the Inn and each are beautifully appointed with hand chosen pieces. Common rooms encourage conversation and contemplation, with only the occasional nod to technology. Though there are televisions in the Inn, they do not intrude on the guest rooms and are much more a back drop than the centerpiece of the Inn. Beautiful fireplaces and comfortable, period couches fill the rooms and a large front porch practically begs for visitors to sit a spell. The Everetts were fortunate to find a great fit in General Manager and Inn Keeper John Shelton and he has been on board with the project since the extensive renovations began. Since opening on June 1, 2013, the Inn has been busy with bridal luncheons and receptions, as well as accommodating overnight guests. With the approaching changing leaves, football season and upcoming holidays, Shelton looks for the Inn to be a busy place. Her five sleeping rooms can accommodate up to 12 people and they are already booked for Thanksgiving. The Everetts encourage people to stop by and visit the common rooms when they are not occupied with club meetings or business lunches. The halls of the Inn have seen such prestigious guests as three former Presidents, divas such as Joan Crawford and iconic musicians like Roy Acuff. There may even be a few guests of a ghostly nature, but, in the style of the Shepherd Inn, they are all welcoming. It is an exciting time for both the proprietors and the Town as one of the historical mainstays opens her doors to travelers and townspeople, once again. The Grande Dame is back and she is better than ever!
