Patriots Fall After Valiant Effort To South Doyle 14-28

Leroy Shannon Field in Dandridge, Tennessee, saw opening night action as the Jefferson County Patriots squared off against the South Doyle Cherokees.

First quarter of Season 2013 in Dumplin Valley started out good for the Patriots, as South Doyle Kicked off to Jefferson County and Jefferson County answered with an eighty-five yard touchdown carry by  number 4, Jones. Giovanni Morales kicked in the extra point, bringing the score seven to zero, Jefferson County. South Doyle’s attempt to move the ball was thwarted by the Patriots, with Seal in on several stops and resulting in South Doyle having to punt. The Patriots next drive was bolstered when the Cherokees ended up with a flag on the play, however they couldn’t take advantage of the penalty and threw an interception to end the quarter.

In South Doyle’s next drive they scored a touch down, Matthis’ kick was good for the extra point conversion, for a score of seven to seven. Lattimer, had some impressive running on the Patriots next drive, though penalty’s also moved markers and the Patriots ended their answering drive with a deep punt into Cherokee territory.  South Doyle answered with a fifty-two yard carry, with a good extra point conversion, moving the score to fourteen to seven. Jefferson County’s next drive was cut short by the third South Doyle interception. South Doyle had a fumble but their own, Latham, recovered the ball, and Jefferson County ended the play after South Doyle failed to convert the fourth down. South Doyle ended the final drive of the half when they recovered a fumble.

After the halftime show, South Doyle received and both teams struggled to find the end zone on a pair of drives. The Cherokees and the Patriots both managed to break through and add points on the board, with South Doyle posting first with a seventy-six yard carry by their own number six, and a good extra point conversion, making the score twenty-one to seven. Jefferson County immediately answered back when Jones returned the kick for a ninety-four yard carry, upping the score to twenty-one to fourteen. South Doyle’s next drive was cut short when Jefferson County had an interception of their own. The resulting drive was looking like it was looking like it was going to end with three extra points by Giovanni Morales but the attempt was no good. Before South Doyle’s next drive went to the fourth quarter, they had a successful fourth down conversion.

Even with the successful fourth down conversion, South Doyle was still forced to punt the drive away. Jones, in the next drive, had a fumble that he also recovered, however the Patriots’ drive also ended with a punt. The Cherokees couldn’t find a first down, however they were able to benefit from a Jefferson County fumble that South Doyle regretfully recovered and scored the final touchdown of the night, making the score twenty-eight to fourteen. On the last drive of the night, Dalton Morgan had a very successful run that ended in injury for Morgan. The Patriots did not give up and continued to fight until the final whistle, however they were unable to close out a close game ending drive and the final score was 28-14, with the Patriots posting their first loss of the season. The next game is next Friday, September 14th, at 7:30 pm, when the Jefferson County Patriots will be hosting Greeneville.
