Missing The Pools

It will soon be time to close the pool for the year. Though I love fall, I also love seeing my grandchildren, nieces and nephews enjoying the opportunity to swim and miss that when the pool closes. Of course, years ago, when my own children were young, we didn’t have a swimming pool at home. Back then, almost no one had a private pool. We swam everyday but we traveled to a public pool to take our daily dip. When the kids were very young, we went to Sevierville to the Country Club to swim. Fortunately, my uncle was an avid golfer and his membership included pool privileges, which he extended to us. After a while, we went to the County pool. I remember the pool as being large and family friendly. It was a great place to spend a few hours chatting with the other Moms while the kids worked off some energy. The lifeguards were local teenagers and the atmosphere was good. We spent many summers whiling away the days by the chlorine filled waters. Alas, my children grew older and I stopped tanning and started seeking the shade. Gone were the days of suntan oil and Tab colas. I must admit that, while a private pool is wonderful, there is something equally wonderful about the community gathering on a hot, summer day to enjoy a swim. So, soon the pool will be closed down for the season but we all know that time flies by and before you know it, we will be splashing around again. Until then, the belly flops and cannon balls will be vivid in my memories.
