Women’s golf wraps up day one of Full Moon BBQ Invite

Carson-Newman finished day one of the Montevallo Full Moon BBQ Invitational in eighth place following a 329.

Danielle Baiunco (Melbourne, Fla.) rounded out a top 20 performance with a 79 (+9) to finish in a tie for 12.  Meridith Hawkins (Powell, Tenn.) rests two strokes beyond her with an 81 (+11) and in a tie for 21st.

The duo is nine and 11 shots off the lead, respectively.

“This was overall a tough day for our team,” Carson-Newman head women’s golf coach Suzanne Strudwick said of the afternoon that featured just one round below 80. “We’ll be working on our short games, trusting our swings off the tee and trusting in ourselves.”

Lauren Hodge (Jefferson City, Tenn.), Chelsea Passmore (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Mary Tunnell (Cordova, Tenn.) are clustered together in the standings.  Hodge shot an 84 (+13), while Tunnell and Passmore each had 85s (+14).

It was ultimately the par fives that proved to be Carson-Newman’s undoing.  The Eagles were plus 16 on such holes – the worst such figure in the tournament.  That’s in apposition to how the Eagles played the par threes. C-N’s 3.52 stroke average was the third best for round one on those holes.

Tee time for Tuesday’s round is 8:30 a.m.
