In Jefferson County, seven 4-H members will be starting the Market Hog Project this fall. The 4-H members will be getting 50 to 70 pound pigs and will raise them through January 2014 when the pigs will then weigh about 250 pounds. Since the 4-H program concentrates on teaching life skills and responsibility to 4-Hers, the 4-H members will become the CEO of their Market Hog Company. They will learn to keep financial records on their project as well as learn about different feeds, the parts of a hog, and different breeds of hogs. The 4-Hers will also learn about setting and achieving goals and ethical decision-making.
