Church Christmas Memories

Christmas is a time of memories. When I think of Christmas, I remember the many years in church and the special times with church, family and friends. There is just something about those times that stay in my memory.

As a child, I have vivid memories of my church family and “hanging of the greens” in our small country church. Everyone was closely linked within the church. Most members had shared weddings, births and deaths with each other. Christmas was an especially sentimental time.  On Christmas eve, the church presented a reenactment of the Holy Night and the birth of the Christ Child. This was always a reminder of the reason we celebrated the season. In candle light, the wise men and shepherds approached the holy family to worship the Christ Child. The play was performed by adults who looked as if they had stepped out of the bible. I loved the feelings that stirred in me, as I watched with the wonder of a young child. The Christmas story was read and the reverence in the church was felt by all. The reading was followed by Christmas carols. After the solemn ceremony was finished, Santa Clause made a visit to the church, with a gift for each member and a special treat provided by the church fathers. The treat was always a simple brown paper lunch bag, filled with oranges, apples, tangerines, nuts, chewing gum and a large peppermint candy cane.  I looked forward to that night each year.

Growing older and becoming a mother, the church still played an important role in celebrating the season. During this time, Christmas began by preparing for the choir’s Christmas cantata and the children’s choir and play. Rehearsals were many, with the Christmas spirit abounding, in adults and children. By the time the ceremony for “hanging of the greens” arrived, Christmas was bursting out all over the church. Parties were given for the children, to the excitement of everyone. The Christmas cantata brought chills, as we remembered the Holy Family and the Christ Child. I never get tired of hearing the story of the Nativity, and to this day it refreshes my body and soul. The children always presented a wonderful play, with glorious music. All ages participated in the production. Every child had a part and performed to perfection, impressing very proud parents and grandparents, along with the church family.

What wonderful memories I have collected through the years. From the very small country church, to a growing larger church, to the very large church of today. Christmas is a time for celebrating and the perfect celebration for me, is with church, family and friends. Hopefully, your memories of Christmas are equally wonderful and brighten your days throughout the season.
