Christmas Memory

A Christmas Memory Dedicated To My Siblings, Cousins And Faithful Readers… MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Twas the night before Christmas, when down on the farm,
The cows had been milked and were out of the barn.
The stockings were hung and everyone was thrilled,
That maybe, just maybe, they soon would be filled.

The families were gathered for Christmas cheer,
Knowing all the while that Santa was near.
And Mamaw in her kitchen, and Nanny in his chair,
Called us to the wonderful feast, held every year.

When out on the lawn we heard a noise,
We all looked around at the girls and the boys.
What was it, what could it be?
We ran to the window, but there was nothing to see.

And then we heard an alarming sound,
Could it be, was there something on the ground?
But, no, the sound was coming from inside,
It was only the phone, not Santa, outside.

And when the phone was answered, there was a surprise,
Each child was called to the phone, each with wide eyes.
And… then… my turn came,
And he said ho-ho-ho, and called me by name!

“Now Mom! now, Dad! We must go home!
Santa is here… cause he’s on the phone!
Would he leave gifts if we were away,
Or, would he pass us by… oh what do you say?

As soon as the gifts were all untied,
We, once again looked out at the sky.
Seeing nothing there, we feared he was gone,
But hope remained with us, for ever so long.

And then, in a twinkling, we were out in the car,
With only two miles ahead, it wasn’t very far..
As I stuck out my head, and was turning around,
Dad pulled into the driveway, but there was no sound.

And then in a twinkling, we were in the house,
As you can imagine, we were quiet as a mouse.
Was he here or had he left us behind,
With not even a toy of any kind?

The lights went on, and what did we see?
To our amazement, there were toys under the tree.
Santa had left toys, even though we were not home,
Maybe… it was because he talked to us on the phone.

Whatever the reason, we did not care,
We were just glad our toys were here.
So off we went to play and to play,
We didn’t have to wait till Christmas Day!

Then out on the roof top, we heard a noise,
Had he been watching, while we played with our toys?
Well… I could swear I did hear him say,
Of course it was from a long distance away.

“Happy Christmas to all, on this Christmas Day”
