Audit Committee Looking For Solution In The Books

The Jefferson County Audit Committee met on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, in the Historic Jefferson County Courthouse.

The Meeting was Called to Order by Committee Chairman Mills. Absent from Roll Call was Committee Member Griffith.

Minutes from the November meeting were Approved following a Motion from Committee Member Estes and 2nd from Committee Member Jett.

Committee Member Joe High brought two Motions before the Committee for consideration.

1. Capitalize the cost of development of the permitted land space for the Landfill, less the utilization to date. High stated that the County had expensed rather than capitalized costs that could offset a portion of the nearly $5 million dollar deficit that is a reoccurring audit finding. Jefferson County Finance Director Helton will check with State auditors to see if assets will offset some of the costs. The Motion was 2nd by Jett and Passed.

2. High made a Motion for the Solid Waste/ Sanitation Board to proceed with re-permitting for the possibility of adjusting the closure and post closure costs associated with the Landfill. Sanitation officials contend that the County has not met the projected usage of the Landfill and that the costs associated with closure/post closure are affected by the projection. Re-permitting would allow the possibility of reassessment. The Motion was 2nd by Estes and the Motion Passed.

3. A recommendation to fund the Landfill closure and post closure costs was deferred until more information on accurate costs is available, with a Motion from High and 2nd from Estes.
