Extreme Cold & School Days

I have been seriously concerned about the students that are waiting on the bus on these cold mornings. I know that many parents are worried that the kids will have to go to school on Saturdays or miss out on Spring Break if we miss too many days. Is there any way to get the days forgiven so that the kids can stay home and warm during the extreme cold?

According to Tennessee Code, the State Commissioner of Education can forgive a limited amount of missed school days due to illness or natural disaster. The Governor did declare Tennessee in a State of Emergency during the recent extreme weather and, therefore, it is conceivable that the local Department of Education could petition for the days to be forgiven, should the system exhaust its ten day cushion. Certainly, no one wants to attend school on Saturday or lose their break, especially the DOE. I would suggest that the DOE is carefully watching days missed, however they will not put students at risk. In the past, groups of school systems have gone together and petitioned for relief for extreme circumstances. With the completion of the building program on a tight schedule, I believe that the DOE will do everything in their power to keep their break schedule.
