P E T R O G L Y P H S… That was the word that made Sarah Buttry, an 8th grader at White Pine School,  the 2014 Jefferson County Spelling Bee Champion at a competition held Monday night at New Market Elementary School. Sarah needed only 4 rounds of competition to clinch first place while an additional 4 rounds were needed before Adriana Rehg, a Jefferson Elementary 4th grader took second place and Krista Watts, a Mt. Horeb 5th grader, finished third.

The competition was composed of the first and second place finishers of each elementary and middle school spelling bee.  Each school winner earned the right to advance to the regional competition to be held in Knoxville.  The competition was overseen by judges Sherry Finchum, Jefferson County Director of Elementary Education and Ruth Pohlman, the county’s Director of Secondary Education.  Susan Roberts, Jefferson County Literacy Specialist, served as the Pronouncer.  Dr. Charles Edmonds, Director of Schools, was on hand to congratulate the winners and present trophies.
