A standing room only crowd at Farragut High School saw an incredible sub-state game between Jefferson County and Farragut. The stakes were incredibly high and the level of play and intensity was even higher. In a back and forth game throughout, the Lady Patriots willed their way to their first state tournament appearance since the 1982-1983 season.
Farragut would come out in the first quarter knocking down two quick threes, and the atmosphere was absolutely chaotic. The Lady Admirals would lead after one, 12-11. The Lady Patriots would start the second quarter on a 5-0 run, and the halftime score was all knotted, 18-18. Farragut would hit three more threes in the third period of play but only hold the slimmest of margins at 33-32 heading to the fourth. The largest lead of the game for either team would come in the fourth, when the Lady Admirals held a 39-34 lead with just over three minutes remaining. Jefferson County would counter and an Autumn Dodson three would tie the game at 40 apiece. The Lady Patriots held the ball from the 1:30 second mark and would call a timeout with 9.1 seconds remaining to set up the winning play. They came out and a foul called with six ticks left would send Tori Griffin to the line for two free throws. The sophomore would drain the two shots and a final shot by Farragut would sail long. The celebration was on and Jefferson County advances to its first state tournament appearance in 31 years.
Assistant Coach Sarah Jane Manis, daughter of head coach Rick Sinard said “ It is truly a wonderful experience to share with him.” On her dad’s first trip as a head coach to the state tournament. “He is definitely deserving of this opportunity.” As for her, “It feels amazing, my sophomore and junior year we were beat both years in sub-state, so it feels great to be going.”
Freshman Makaila “Wooly Bear” Woolard led the Lady Pats in scoring with 13 points, followed by Brooke Taylor with 9 points. Tori Griffin and Autumn Dodson would score 7 and 6 respectively, while Alexandria Alder and Julia Codispoti would chip in 4 and 3.
