Jefferson County opened their 2014 campaign Monday evening against the Seymour Eagles, however it was not the start that the Patriots had hoped for this year.  The Eagles dominated the game throughout, and the Patriots struggled to get much offense going in the opener.  Seymour tallied 17 hits en route to a 20-1 victory over the Patriots.

The first inning got off to a good start for starting pitcher Logan Hayes, as he struck out Seymour’s first batter Kevin Escalona looking.  Larry Kennedy was up next for Seymour and hit a bomb over the left centerfield wall and Seymour led 1-0.  Two more hits for the Eagles would have them leading 2-0 after the top of the first.  The Patriots would put the ball in play three times in the first inning, but couldn’t find the holes in the Eagle’s defense.  Seymour would score five more runs in the top of the second, while the Patriots couldn’t manage to muster up their offense and trailed 7-0 after two.  The Patriots would show some life in the third when Brandon Bingle ripped one to right centerfield resulting in a triple and a scoring threat for the Pats.  It wouldn’t take long for him to score, as the next batter, Logan Hayes, would hit a single back up the middle scoring Bingle for Jefferson County’s first run of the 2014 season. Unfortunately for the Patriots, that would be the end of their scoring on the night as they fell to Seymour, 20-1.

First year head coach Gaines Cox said “Seymour has a great team.” He added “We are obviously disappointed with the outcome.  We must improve in all areas pitching, defense, as well as putting together more quality at bats.”

Jefferson County returned to action Tuesday at 5pm at Seymour, at Halls on Friday at 5:30pm, and return home Saturday to face South Doyle at 1 pm
