Cox, Patriots Ready to “Stomp The Plate”

First year Patriot Head Coach, Gaines Cox, is ready to start his “dream job” in 2014. Cox previously served as an assistant to David Holland from 1996-2001 at Jefferson County as well as coached the freshman. “It was the one job I had my eye on back when I was an assistant here. It is my dream job.”

Coach Cox will have a lot of coaching to do, as Jefferson County does not have any seniors on this team. “Every year we want to win championships of course. We hope as we progress, throughout the season we continue to get better, and that we are playing our best baseball at the end of the year.”

This year’s motto is Stomp The Plate, but it is more than baseball says Cox, “That’s something we have talked about since we were hired. It’s giving your best effort in everything you do, whether it is out in the community, whether it’s sitting in the classroom, whether It’s in the weight room, in conditioning, or in practice.” He added “ In the game of baseball the team that stomps the plate the most wins so we have carried that over to the game of baseball.”

Jefferson County’s coaching staff has a definite Patriot feel to it. All three of Cox’s assistants are former JCHS standouts on the diamond. Zach Reese, a two time all region player at JCHS, is the only remaining coach left from the previous coaching staff. Langdon Potts, 2004 graduate and standout at Carson-Newman, joins the staff this year as well as 2008 JCHS graduate Zach Long, who also played his collegiate baseball at Carson-Newman. Cox would rave about his staff saying, “All three of those guys, and I mean this with every fiber in my being, are phenomenal teachers of the game. I’m very blessed as the head coach to have these three guys.”

Jefferson County is 1-1 on this very young season, with a 20-1 defeat to Seymour, also a 2-1 victory over that same Seymour team. See full Schedule Below:
