The Jefferson County School Board met for their Regular Monthly Voting Session on Thursday, April 24, 2014 in the Patriot Academy.

Chairman of the Board Potts Called the Meeting to Order. Absent from Roll Call were Board Members Vines and Rogers. Director’s Art Gallery Winners were recognized, as were the Jefferson County High School Girl’s and Boy’s Basketball Teams and the Wrestling Team. Also recognized were Teachers of the Year Libby Jaynes (K-3), Sara McCue (5-8) and Shelia Evans (9-12).

Board Member Bradley made a requested to add the naming of the new auditorium to the agenda under new business. The Agenda as amended was Approved with a Motion from Jarnigan and 2nd from Cavanah. Upon a Motion from Jarnigan and 2nd from Cavanah, the Consent Agenda was Approved.

No teachers, students or citizens requested to appear before the Board. Jefferson County Finance Director Helton provided the financial reports. Under New Business, Helton presented two budget amendments, one for the General Purpose Fund and one for the Federal Purpose Fund. With a Motion from Bradley and 2nd from Jarnigan, the amendments were Approved.

Board Members Approved TSBA 2015 Membership Dues of $7,388 with a Motion from Bradley and 2nd from Cavanah. Use of the Fairgrounds was Approved for September 5, 2014 and October 20-25 2014 for Carson Newman University with a Motion from Bradley and 2nd from Jarnigan.

Director of Jefferson County Schools, Dr. Edmonds, informed the Board that the budget would be ready on Monday for review, discussion on May 8 and for vote on May 15. Last minute adjustments were necessary due to the loss of State funded teacher salary increases and a partial loss of equalization funds.

Upon a Motion from Cavanah and 2nd from Lowery, the Board Approved the adoption of 2014-2015 Social Studies textbooks. They were informed that Social Studies is the only subject that will be purchased next year and that math will replace Science in the textbook rotation due to curriculum changes that are pending.

The Board Approved a new salary schedule with the recommendation of Director Edmonds and with a Motion from Jarnigan and 2nd from Cavanah, which reflected the loss of State funds for increases but does utilize the equalization funds that were received.

Board Member Bradley brought a Motion to name the new auditorium at JeffersonCountyHigh School the JamesDSwannPerformingArtsCenter. His Motion was 2nd by Cavanah and Director Edmonds read into the minutes a summary of former Jefferson County High School Principal and 38 year educator with the Jefferson County Department of Education Swann’s contributions. The Motion Passed Unanimously.
