Early Voting Numbers Best 2010

Jefferson County Post Election Update feature 01142014Candidates for the May election cycle have been campaigning in full force for several weeks. Early voting ended on May 1, 2014 with the main office, satellite offices and absentee votes coming in at a count of 4466. Of that number, 126 were absentee votes. According to Charles Gibson, Administrator of Elections for the Jefferson County Election Commission, Jefferson County historically has a close split in early and Election Day voting. Should that historical trend hold, Jefferson County could vote nearly 9,000 in the May 6th Primary, which would best the 2010 May election cycle by around 500 votes.

Unique to this Primary election is the addition of a Democrat Primary. Documents provided by the Election Commission state that 88 of those early voting at the main or satellite office were Democrats, still leaving the vast majority (4378) voting Republican. Initially, the early voting numbers were struggling to keep up with the 2010 count but a strong finish last week pushed the count above the 2010 early vote. While Saturday numbers were significantly lower than week day early voting numbers, Friday, April 25 was a big early voting day in Jefferson County, as 496 voters cast their early ballot. Those that missed early voting deadlines will have the opportunity to cast their ballot on Election Day, Tuesday, May 6, 2014.
