Jefferson City Fire Department Plans Active Shooter Functional Exercise at Jefferson Middle School – May 19, 2014

Jefferson City Fire DepartmentThe Jefferson City Fire Department is conducting a full-scale, functional exercise at the JeffersonMiddle School on May 19, 2014.  The drill will begin at 9:00 AM and conclude by 12:00 PM.  The drill will include realistic law enforcement and emergency responder response to multiple shooters inside the school during the school day.

Although school will be in session during the exercise, students will be “locked down” and allowed to function in classrooms but will not be allowed to change classes until after the drill is completed.  Various JeffersonCounty law enforcement and emergency responders will be participating in the exercise, which completes an exercise plan that included planning meetings, a tabletop exercise and the functional drill.

As a final part of the scenario, one wing of the school will be “evacuated” to Jefferson Middle’s Relocation Site via school system buses to simulate a full scale evacuation drill and returned to the school.

Parents, family and community members are asked not to be alarmed at the large number of law enforcement and emergency responders around the school on the drill day.  Further, the training may involve simulated gunshots, explosions or other loud sounds.  No live ammunition will be used during the exercise.
