Jefferson County High School Undergraduates were honored for excellent academic and special area achievement on Wednesday evening, April 30, 2014. The annual event was hosted by Carson-Newman University and highlighted the best of the best of the 2013-2014 school year. Dr. Charles Edmonds, Director of Jefferson County Schools, as well as Dr. Scott Walker, Principal of Jefferson County High School, were on hand to congratulate award winners. Narrators for the evening were Steven McCoy, Anna Lee Hawkins and Keegan Tucker.

For their success in producing short stories relating to the Cooperative, Cera Dominicis was selected first place female winner and Anna Lee Hawkins was second place. The first place male was Caleb Maxey, and second place was Josiah Watson. First place winners will spend an all-expenses paid week in Washington, D.C., and second place winners receive a cash prize of $75.

Service Learning Program
Jefferson County High School’s Service Learning program encourages a lifetime of service as it collaborates with leaders across the county. United with Skills in Action, this partnership totaled 3,969 hours in JeffersonCounty. When calculated with the minimum wage, the combined total brings $28,775 of service to our county. The students would like to thank the many placement directors for mentoring this network of positive youth development. Jefferson County illustrates the national service-learning theme–“Our World-Our Future”.

The award for Outstanding Performance in AP music theory goes to Keegan Tucker.
These students were chosen from students from the Eastern Tennessee region band programs, through competitive audition, to be included in the 2014 ETSBOA All State East band: Joshua Fox and John Garber.

Science Bowl
The Science department would like to recognize the Science Bowl Team for representing JCHS at the Regional Science Bowl Competition at Pellissippi: Jordan Alexander, Thomas Chandler, Daniel Price, and Devin Wilcox.
Science Olympiad
The following students won medals at the regional Science Olympiad event and earned the right to compete at the state tournament. Seth Franklin, Kassie Hall, Caleb Maxey, Shay Phagan, Fiona Scruggs, and Josiah Watson. In addition to placing at the regional level, the following students earned medals at the state competition: Miranda Long and Kate Zander.
Science Fair
The science department would like to recognize Bree Eccles, Katrina Eccles and Erin Bacon for their participation in the Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair held on the campus of the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Bree and Katrina’s research project was titled “Caffeine Usage as an Environmentally Friendly Pesticide: a Dual Model Study on Gender Effects.” This project earned the following awards: Finalist Honorable Mention; Biology Teacher Award certificate along with a $75 cash prize, and Special Award ribbons. Erin’s research project was titled “Up, Up, and Away with Solar Power Part III”. This project earned the following awards: U.S. Navy Award/Naval Research Award; 2nd place Philanthropic Educational Organization Award along with a cash prize and Special Award ribbon.
