Wahl Earns All-Region Honor; Bucs’ National Ranking Sets New High for ETSU Women’s Golf

Buccaneer.289.1245.KThough the season may be over, the ETSU women’s golf team continues to get good news.

Last week, junior Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) was named to the Women’s Golf Coaches Association’s All-Region team, earning a spot on the east squad thanks to her fabulous play throughout the year – in particular during both the NCAA East Regional and the NCAA Championships.

In addition, the final Golfstat.com rankings were released following NCAA competition and the Bucs finished the year with a No. 41 national mark. That ranking bests the previous high of No. 42 in 2008.

“What an incredible year for our women’s golf program,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “I wanted this team to go to nationals, and missing by just three shots was eye opening for the ladies in this program because they now believe we can compete for a national championship. That belief is immeasurable for the future ladies, and carrying a ranking in the top 40’s for the spring again is another step up for us. We continue to develop a team of hard-working, dedicated ladies who love this game. It has been an exciting journey.”

Wahl said she was grateful for the opportunities she had at ETSU.

“I want to say a big thank you to my coach for three years, Stefanie Shelton. I am so thankful for everything,” said Wahl, who has already earned a degree and is planning to begin her professional career in the fall. “Also to my assistant coach Lauren Stratton for this year and especially all her help at the NCAAs.

“Being named to the region team is a special honor and I’m grateful to be named to the list.”

Shelton said Wahl’s efforts reached the standards that she wants to set for ETSU golf.

“We want to compete for a national title every year, and I am very proud that Gabriella was able to compete for an individual title for ETSU,” Shelton said. “She was a great representative for our program and I am confident that she will excel now as a professional.”
