After a long career in public service for Jefferson County, Billy Mitchell has retired. Mitchell is a veteran employee with 39 years of dedication to the people of Jefferson County, as well as his fellow co workers, and they were pleased to be able to send him off with a luncheon on Thursday, Billy’s last day at work. The Historic Jefferson County Courthouse filled early with employees bringing in a special dish to add to the fare. For those that work in the downtown County buildings, Mitchell is as synonymous with the Courthouse as the stately staircase and hallways filled with history.

Mitchell had a special guest at his retirement party. Senator Lamar Alexander’s son was on hand to wish Billy well and present him with a flag for his years of distinguished service. Mitchell will spend his retirement enjoying time with his wife Vicky and son Archie. As his fellow employees gathered to give Mitchell the send off he deserved, it was obvious that he will be missed and an era has come to a close. The career that began in 1975 came to a close on the final day of July 2014, but the impact that Mitchell had on the buildings that he cared for and co workers that he looked left a lasting impression. Billy Mitchell may not be at work on Monday morning, but he will remain an institution around the Historic Jefferson County Courthouse and will certainly be a tough act to follow.
