The Time Has Finally Come

editorial-logo3The time has, finally, come to elect a new Chairman of the County Commission. Let me say that newly elected Jefferson County Clerk Frank Herndon did a great job of running the Work Session last week and it could have gotten out of hand. There was some disagreement about those seeking the Chair position entertaining questions from the Commission, as well as how committees, such as the budget and nominating committees, will be seated. And then, there was the six minute diatribe from newly seated Commissioner McGraw about last week’s Editorial. All could have been uncomfortable but none were, thanks largely to Herndon’s steady gait throughout the meeting.

This week one will take the seat at the head of the table and I certainly hope that Commissioners are taking the appointment seriously. The past Commission was ruled as much by alliances as parliamentary procedures and the people paid for their inability to put aside petty differences. Debate is natural and good but when it allowed to descend to personal arguments and agendas it is time for someone to step in and regain control. That person is the Chairman of the County Commission. When cooler heads must prevail, it is the charge of the Chairman to be the neutral voice of reason. Certainly, they should represent their district and constituents with their vote, but their voice must be that of neutrality.

There are some very fine Commissioners that are simply not the right fit for the position of Chairman. In fact, more will be unsuitable for the position than will have the temperament for the job.

I have spent more hours than I would like to admit studying the Jefferson County Commission. What we had degenerated into was not a representation of who the people of Jefferson County are and what we stand for. This is a fresh start and, aside from a little push and pulling in the Work Session, I am hopeful. Monday night is the first test of this Commission and it is a big one. A smooth, thoughtful vote is all that can be expected. We cannot ask for more and should not accept less. I, along with many others, will be watching closely, from the cheap seats.
