Happy Veteran’s Day

Veteran’s Day is a long established holiday that celebrates the sacrifices of Veterans across the United States, both present and past. Originally known as Armistice Day, it was the acknowledgment of the temporary end of fighting in World War I between the Allied Nations and Germany, which took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. Though the war would not officially be over until June of 1919, the celebration began when the fighting ended.

Several years later, World War II began and an unprecedented number of American troops were mobilized. In 1954, Congress made the decision to include these brave men and women in a day of honor and officially changed Armistice Day to Veteran’s Day, keeping the same date of celebration. When the uniformed holiday act took place, an attempt was made to move the celebration date but Americans refused to let go of November 11th as the time of honoring veterans. In 1975, President Ford officially returned Veteran’s Day to November 11th. It is estimated that there are currently around 4,800 veterans living in Jefferson County. Thank you to the more than 19 million veterans that have served our Nation well and make us proud to be Americans. Your service and sacrifice are deeply appreciated.
