Walters State Community College invites community members to be part of the sixth annual Slam Jam poetry contest Nov. 24, 6-9 p.m., in the lobby of the Judge William H. Inman Humanities Complex on the Morristown Campus.

Those wishing to perform should register at 5:30 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded Previous events have drawn more than 60 people.

“Slam poetry is just performance poetry,” said Sherri Jacobs, associate professor of English and advisor to Word Up, the college’s club for English majors and language lovers.

“Slam Jam poetry involves the poetry and some beats and jazz. The popularity continues to go. Individuals perform the poetry instead of just reading it. The words come alive for audiences,” Jacobs said.

Poetry does not have to be original, but original work will gain extra points in the judging process. Jacobs also asked that poetry chosen be appropriate for all audiences. Performances are limited to 10 minutes, but can actually be just a minute or two.

No advance reservations or entry fees are needed. Word Up will offer a variety of coffee and snacks for sale at affordable prices during its events. For more information, contact Jacobs at (423) 585-6965.
