Intermodal Project Still Without Steam

Six years have passed since the proposal for an Intermodal location in New Market, Tennessee was publicly presented by Norfolk Southern. Despite the acquisition of property by the rail company, the Intermodal is still more projection than reality in Jefferson County. A flailing economy had Norfolk Southern tapping the brakes on the addition to the Crescent Corridor and, though the economic outlook has brightened somewhat, the Intermodal project slotted for New Market has not picked up any steam.

Susan Terpay, Director of Public Relations for Norfolk Southern, addressed the status of the Intermodal project via email.

There has been no change in the status of this project since the last time we spoke. At this time, we have no plans to construct new intermodal terminals as part of our Crescent Corridor project. We view the property as a long-term investment and will continue to monitor business conditions regarding future development.

The Norfolk Southern Representative did not address any timeline or other projects that might be under consideration before the company looks toward the New Market location or what, if any, other plans are under consideration for the property that has already been acquired in the New Market area. The Crescent Corridor Project is a multi billion dollar project that spans more than 2,500 miles and 11 states.
