Jefferson County ran into a buzzsaw that is Maryville High School football on Friday night. The #1 ranked team in class 6A continued its dominance at the cost of Jefferson County this time, but not all was lost in the midst of defeat. “All we have done all year long is brag about what a high character team this is, and they are.” Cobble added, “And I felt like they proved that tonight.”

On Maryville’s first possession the Jefferson County defense seemed poised to get off the field and give their offense a chance to score first. However, on third down Austin Ensley found Kelby Brock for a beautiful 83-yard touchdown and the score was 7-0 Maryville, quickly. “We had a chance to get off the field there with down and distance and weren’t able to do it.” Cobble explained that is something you can’t have happen when playing Maryville. “That’s why they are who they are, you have to make routine plays against them and not let them get big plays, and we weren’t able to do that.”

Jefferson County’s offense got off to a good start, moving the ball 36 yards before the drive eventually stalled at the Maryville 44. Maryville would then march right down the field for yet another score. This time Ensley would keep it to himself on a quarterback option and race 20 yards to paydirt, 14-0 Rebels.

Isaiah Cobb, cousin of Green Bay Packer, Randall Cobb, would score the next two touchdowns for Maryville. One of his rushes were from 2-yards out, while the other was from 9. Dylan Hopkins would close out the half scoring on a keeper from 34-yards out, and the score was 35-0 at the half in favor of the Rebels.

Jefferson County would not tuck their tail and hide in the second half, and Cobble says that was the challenge at halftime. “We challenged them at halftime to wipe the scoreboard off and to show who you were, regardless of what it says on the board.”

The Patriots did just that, with 3:03 left in the 3rd quarter, Gorel Soumare would take an interception tipped ball from Dalton Morgan, 80-yards to the endzone and Jefferson County closed to gap to 35-7. Unfortunately that would be all the Patriots could muster as they fell, 35-7.

Austin Jenkins finished the night 16-27 for 142 yards, while Dalton Morgan had 6 carries for 36 yards rushing. Noah Carter ended with 4 catches for 84 yards and Gorel had 6 catches for 29 yards.

Jefferson County falls to 2-1 on the season and travels to Morristown West on September 11th.
