Some Jefferson County Schools Go Into Lockdown

Jefferson County Schools in Jefferson City, Tennessee have been on lock down since early Thursday morning, September 17, 2015, according to information provided by School Staff. Measures to secure the school were put in place following the escape of what has been classified as a mental patient from Tennova Hospital, which is located near Jefferson Middle School, Jefferson Elementary School and Jefferson Academy. Unconfirmed reports indicated that the patient may have attempted to solicit a ride from a parent at one of the schools. It is unclear if he was successful in the attempt. However, Director of Business Affairs for Jefferson County Schools, Michael Phagan, stated that the Department of Education is confident that the schools are secure and the students are safe. Currently, there is a strong police presence at the impacted schools and in the area, in general.

Jefferson City Police were unable to comment at this time. Decisions regarding the release of students from school at the end of the day have not, yet, been determined as the Department of Education awaits more information regarding the location or capture of the individual.

**** UPDATE **** The Department of Education has confirmed that the Shelter in Place order has been lifted, on the advice of the Jefferson City Police Department. It is unclear what information prompted the lifting of the lock down. However, unconfirmed reports indicate that the subject may have been spotted outside the area. Jefferson City Police were not available for comment.
