Retention Funds Pave The Way

Money may be available for a significant paving project at Jefferson County High School, according to information provided to the School Board by Department of Education Business Affairs Director Michael Phagan during their meeting Thursday evening, February 25, 2016. Phagan stated that funds left over from several renovation and building projects can be combined with an estimated $300,000 that can be used from the retention funds. When requested to provide a ball part figure of funds that would be available for the project he estimated a number around the half a million dollar point, with a small contribution coming from excess Building 8 funds and around $200,000 combined from excess JCHS proper renovation funds and Patriot Academy funds. Phagan presented the Board with several options for paving, defining area priorities by need.

On Monday afternoon, Phagan stated that a soft estimate for a total paving package would likely top the three quarters of a million dollar( $750,000) mark. However, he stated that he is relying on those with more expertise in paving to provide a more accurate estimate.

Jefferson County Finance Director Potts brought several budget amendments for approval, including the movement of $100,000 in funds to facilitate the removal and repair of portables. Phagan addressed the Board regarding the request, stating that 8 portables will need to be moved and some will require repair before they can be returned to the leasing company. Two portables belong to Jefferson County and a request was made by the County Commission and the Drug Court for use of those portables for a Senior Center for Strawberry Plains and as administrative offices respectively. The Board approved the budget amendments as presented and approved the donation of two portables to the Jefferson County County Commission for distribution, with the caveat that the Department of Education will not be financially responsible for the transport of the units.

Director Potts informed the Board that a contract was not yet in place with the architect group that was chosen by the Board for the White Pine project, though the close of negotiations appear to be close. Following the signing of contracts with the architect, a contract manager will be sought for the White Pine renovation project. Board Member Vines resigned from the QCOC, which will oversee the White Pine project and Board Member Bradley will join Board Member Cavanah on that committee.
